Joshua's Journey with Asthma
At first, Joshua thought skipping his medication wasn't a big deal. But it quickly turned into a problem that sent him to the emergency room multiple times. βI stopped taking my medicine for a year, and it was one of the biggest mistakes Iβve ever made,β Joshua shared. Without his daily medications, his asthma spiraled out of control. Simple activities like walking or a light jog turned into impossible tasks. He was constantly short of breath, coughing up mucus, and struggling just to stay conscious. βLiterally, a light jog would kill me. I would have to go straight in the house to a nebulizer.β
Joshuaβs condition worsened until he could barely breathe. βThere was a week where I couldnβt breathe at all,β he recalls. Desperate, he went to the ER, but doctors struggled to identify what was happening. βIt was scary. They were giving me EpiPens, needles, trying to keep me conscious.β He found himself in and out of the hospital two or three times during that period, a terrifying experience that left him exhausted and fearful.
It took a major wake-up call for Joshua to understand the severity of his situation. βOne day, I just really couldnβt breathe. I remember thinking, βWhat am I doing to myself?β I didnβt want to end up in the hospital again.β Thatβs when he decided to get back on track and start taking his medications regularly. βEver since I started taking my meds again, everything changed. Iβm able to run, work out, and do sportsβthings I couldnβt do as a kid. I canβt believe I put myself through that.β
Joshua hopes his story can serve as a reminder to others about the importance of managing asthma and staying consistent with medication. βNo one believed me except my mom when I said how bad it was. But now, Iβm proof that taking your meds can turn your life around.β
